The system was developed at the request of a handling and transport equipment operator with the aim of real-time online monitoring of vehicle movements and traffic loads. The basic task was to monitor the position and speed of the vehicles and to obtain objective data on their actual operation.

The solution is based on on-board unit installed directly in the vehicle, which continuously records GPS position, vehicle speed and selected operating parameters. Speed is determined by a combination of GPS and incremental encoder, which increases the accuracy of the measurement. The system also includes Driver identification using RFID tags, with the reader within easy reach of the operator.

The on-board unit allows data acquisition from the CAN bus of the vehicle, providing detailed information on the vehicle's operating conditions, loads and behaviour. This data is fed into a higher-level system for long-term traffic analysis and fleet optimisation.

The system includes security and surveillance functions, such as generating SMS alerts when speeding or leaving a defined area. For service and analytical purposes, a PC application is available to enable reading the tachograph and work with historical data.

Based on operational experience, these units have also been used for monitoring of public transport buses. Retrieved from real operational data was used to analyse the transition to electric buses, especially in terms of routes, speed profiles and operating modes. The solution thus provided an objective basis for decision-making on the electrification of the selected lines.
